From the San Diego Union for Wednesday, july 29,1998:
PALM SPRINGS
Victim ignored warnings
A woman seriously injured in a 600-foot tumble below
a mountainside observation deck twice disregarded
warnings to stay away from the steep slope, authorities
said yesterday.
There was no reason to suspect foul play, said Riverside
County sheriff's deputies.
Sun Hwa Kim, 52, suffered back, neck and head injuries
when she slid Monday evening from Bruggs Viewpoint
at the 8,500-foot level of the San Jacinto Mountains
near the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Kim, a
Korean-speaking Bolivian who lives in Los Angeles,
remained hospitalized in serious condition yesterday
with numerous bruises and scrapes but no broken bones
and was expected to recover fully.
Her son joined her at the hospital yesterday, but she gave
no reason for wandering so close to the edge of the
bluff.
[According to Lorraine Aubert who was working at San
Jacinto at the time, Ms. Kim stated to the park rangers
that "I wanted to be closer to nature." -RG]
