About Fanciful Navigator | Installation of Fanciful Navigator | Configuration of Fanciful Navigator

ball10.gif (972 bytes) A quick warning before we get started. Fanciful Navigator comes configured to work with most modems. In most cases all you will have to do is select the correct COM port and you will be in good shape. If you have not had any problems with your modem, or are not confident in modem configuration, we suggest you return to the Configuring Fanciful Navigator page.

The first field you encounter is the device name. This can be changed to better reflect the name of your modem, and if you have multiple modems hooked up to your system this can be a big help. The "Port" field defines the COM port actually used by this modem. This must be set correctly in order for Fanciful Navigator to dial your modem. The "Maximum Speed" drop down menu can be set to the highest speed at which your COM port will reliably communicate. And for most error correcting and data compressing modems available today, the "Lock port at this speed" box should be checked. Once you are satisfied with your settings in this Window, proceed with the next bullet, below.

modem2.gif (11019 bytes)ball10.gif (972 bytes) Click on the "Connection" tab to see the "Options" box, and the "Modem Settings" box. The settings in the "Options" can be varied to suit your particular situation. The default settings are suitable for most users. In the "Modem Settings" box, the "Reset string" field can be tailored to your particular modem. Carefully review the documentation from your modem manufacturer before changing the reset string. The default reset string is suitable for most modems available today. The "Dial String" field generally does not need to be changed. There is however one BIG exception. If you have Call Waiting through your phone company, you will need to insert a *70 into the dial string immediately after the ATDT. This will assure that your Call Waiting is disabled whenever you are connected to Fanciful Online. Users who repeatedly disconnect from Fanciful Online as a result of Call Waiting interrupts may have their access revoked.
